I was recently reading my favorite magazine, “The Sun”. Something I read made me think, “What if we were already in heaven?” Right here. Right now. I know, I know, a pretty weird thought, but just let me talk about it for a minute. Allow me to think about this a bit.
In that moment, I thought:
- I would pay more attention to that which is beautiful (rather than notice the not-so-perfect).
- I would pay more attention to those parts of my important relationships that are beautiful (rather than focus on the parts that aren’t working).
- I would notice the flowers more, the feel of the wind on my face, the sun on my back, the wonder of the human experience, the miracle that planes fly, that elevators elevate, that our hands are willing to feed our mouths (without ever demanding to have their turn), the wonder of a hug, the tenderness of a nurturing touch, a look, the richness of a call from a friend.
Philosophers and spiritual leaders call living with this kind of awareness being fully present. We have all tasted a little bit of this from time to time. Money cannot buy me this kind of fullness and richness, though I might mistakenly believe that it could.
