How to stay on track: Take baby steps instead of giant leaps, suggests Brad Klontz, Psy.D., a financial psychologist and coauthor of Mind Over Money. Start with a commitment not to accrue more debt, and then go on an all-cash diet. “Leave your credit cards at home when you go shopping, and use cash. There is an emotional distancing that comes with a swipe of a credit card that doesn’t exist when we are slapping down some cold, hard cash at the checkout counter,” Klontz says.
